Contacting Mme Whicker:
Students and parents are welcome to contact me by email pwhicker@wsd1.org. Parents can also contact me by phoning the school 474-1492 and leaving a message. I work mornings only but often check my email in the afternoon or evening.
Help:
Do the practice questions given by the teacher immediately when assigned. Ask for help at this time in completing the questions if you're unsure. Correct your answers to verify your comprehension.
Start homework in class when possible and ask for help from teacher, from educational assistant, or even from a classmate (quietly) during class time. Try to make sure that you've got a good idea of how to complete the homework before leaving class.
Having a peer tutor assigned to help you is also an option. Ask Mme Whicker if you'd like to know more about this, or look in the Kelvin newsletter for information. (see link to poster, and info from newsletter, below)
If you'd like to look into hiring a private tutor, please see Mme Whicker or your guidance counsellor. Sometimes we have a list of names to suggest.
If you are in the Reading is Thinking (RIT) class, make sure you take advantage of homework time when you're given it and ask for help as needed. Make sure you efficiently finish all of your work for the class without wasting time so that you can do other homework if allowed and if there's time.
If you're really stuck, you can try emailing me. I often will be able to answer in the evening.
Help is available out of class time with Mme Whicker at 8:40 every morning and Tuesday and Thursday at lunch in room 12.. If you're coming at lunchtime, try to let me know in class that you'll be coming that day.. or try to arrive promptly (even if it's to let me know that you'll be back in 5 minutes). I won't necessarily stay the entire lunch hour if there are no students needing help.Checking with me in class is a good idea in case help is cancelled that day due to a meeting or other reason.(Be aware that the day before a test is a very popular time to come for help.. and waiting until then is sometimes too late if you need quite a bit of practice.)
See below for Math help times at Kelvin during the lunch hour.
If you know that you are having difficulty, please seek help right away from a classmate, another student, a parent, a peer tutor, resource, a private tutor, If you wait, your problems may compound, making it much more difficult to catch up.
Every lunch hour (beginning in early October), Room 23 is open to any student who is looking for a little extra help in their school work. Peer tutors are ready to help you complete an assignment, re-explain a concept taught in class or study for a quiz. It’s drop-in, so bring your lunch and give us a try. If you want to set up for a regular tutor, come to Room 23 and fill out an application. click on the following for more info
